Q. I´ve been an independent solopreneur for the past 3 years – growing my business as a financial advisor from a start-up with 0 clients and no credibility to a business that produces twice the salary I had at a Fortune 500 company. I´m one of the 3 people in my training class of over 30 that has made it. I´m anxious to expand, but I´m afraid that I might make mistakes and – you know how people are, some of my ex classmates are saying I´m just a beginner and clients should be careful. I suspect they´re just jealous of how successful I´ve been. What do you think?

I’ve been retired for the past two years from a very demanding and successful job in corporate America. During the last two or three years of my career, I couldn’t wait to get out. I was tired and burnt out. I dreamt about playing golf and picking up some of the hobbies I had only dabbled in before. To make a long story short, I’m not sure I made the right decision. Where do I go from here? Joe in Pompano Ps….I don’t really want to get back in the rat race.

I’m having a lot of problems with my business partner. When we opened the business together, we seemed to be on the same page and I felt I could really depend on him. Now it seems like we argue over little things and it takes longer to get things done. I’m not ready to jump ship yet, but it just not as much fun going into work anymore. Fred

She’s working at a clinic right now and her child support payments will stop next year when her son turns 18. I’m going into a new business venture in the service sector and I’m excited about the prospects. I’ve been in business before and have always done well. This time I want to do great! I’ve done the basic business plan and have good financial backing. I’m going to take the general manager position and I have a core team of five employees for start up. I think I’ve done a good job selecting and recruiting – and we have an above-average compensation plan in place. I’m ready to go, but I just want to be sure I’ve done all my homework. I’d like to have an additional perspective…what do you think?

I´ve been working in the administrative department of a freight forwarder for the past 5 years. When I started, I noticed that certain invoices were being altered to save our overseas customers customs fees they would have had to pay on the real value. We have to make up a duplicate set of invoices – the real one and the “official” one. I´m getting increasingly uncomfortable with this practice, but I don´t really know what to do. What do you think? I´m confused.

Today’s the last day of the month and as the owner of a company that sells medical supplies and equipment, I’m facing another month of disappointing sales. My sales team is just not performing and I’m tempted to let them all go and go back to selling myself. What do you think?

I have a sales rep who’s been with us for about 6 months. She’s not performing and I sense I made a mistake hiring her. Is it still too early to tell or should I make a change? -Sales Manager Mary in Miami

I have a successful medical practice. We’re really patient centered and for the most part people are satisfied with our service. My problem is my office manager. Sue’s friendly and people really like her. One of her jobs is to file the insurance claims and she says she doesn’t have enough time to get them all done. She’s basically told me it’s either dealing with patients and appointments or doing the paperwork. I think she can do both. I’ve tried to tell her in a nice way, but she does whatever she wants. I’m just about out of PATIENCE.....What do you suggest I do? Dr. Patience

Last week the receptionist at my law firm quit suddenly to take another job. We were happy with her work and planned to promote her to a more challenging position. To make a long story short, I’m disappointed by the lack of commitment of many employees. We pay a fair wage and have been around a long time, so job security isn’t an issue either. What’s going on?

I have been in my current position at the hospital for over three months, and I am already frustrated with the relationship that has developed between my supervisor and me. I am new to this position and continually let my supervisor know that I am not only open to feedback, but that I am actively seeking it. I know I have a lot to learn in a short amount of time and I want to do my best. I am worried that I am dealing with a supervisor who is extremely passive-aggressive. She will rip other coworkers up and down and have nothing good to say about them, but she never does anything about it. She never addresses the issue with that person, even if it is an issue that needs to be worked through. She only says agreeable things to your face, even though you get the feeling she would like to say something else. She even went so far as to ask a coworker of mine, who is not my supervisor, to talk with me about an issue she was having with a decision I made. Most recently, she has begun subtly injecting criticisms about my work into our casual conversations--with coworkers present! Needless to say, this situation is very frustrating and unproductive. I don't want to make too many waves at my new position, but on the other hand, I know I cannot do my best work in this environment. I am searching for a way to address this issue with her face to face. Bewildered.

I have been asked to chair an important community event. Usually someone with more experience has been in charge. I’m having trouble keeping control of the meetings. The past chair interrupts me and controls information I need, forcing me to work according to her schedule. I think she does not realize how she is treating me. We did have a discussion last week about an instance where she cut me off at the previous meeting. She had not meant to; she was trying to give me a helpful tip. How do I handle a constant complainer? I have an employee who has worked for the company for thirty years. She's a great employee but is always complaining—mainly about all the recent changes. I believe she feels she can say anything because she's worked for the company so long. How do I tactfully tell her how much she complains without losing her as an employee? Tired of Complaints

Help! A co-worker has asked me three times in the past month to bail her out when she got behind on some critical work. She’s going around saying, “If I get in a jam, I’ll just go to Bob. He´s so organized.” Well, I´m not getting paid any extra to her work AND mine, and frankly I´m tired of picking up after people who can´t meet deadlines. I don´t want to seem uncooperative, but I´m really fed up.
